New Green Deal consortium formed - 05/10/2011

A group of industry leaders have joined forces to consider how best to finance the Green Deal scheme for consumers, which may be able to help homeowners get cheap gas for their properties.

The formation of the Green Deal Finance Company, which includes companies such as British Gas, npower and E.ON, was welcomed by the secretary of state for energy and climate change Chris Huhne.

"This is an exciting initiative with the potential to reduce interest rates on Green Deal finance, while also supporting healthy competition amongst Green Deal providers, including small businesses."

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the rollout of the Green Deal is to be the biggest home improvement scheme undertaken in the UK since World War II.

It will help make energy efficient products affordable to more people by removing the upfront cost, thereby enabling homeowners to reduce the amount they pay for gas and electricity.

Last week, British Gas confirmed it will work with social housing group Gentoo to provide residents with cheap energy bills as part of a trial of the Green Deal.
