Suppliers pledge money to support energy campaign - 19/10/2011

Four of the Big Six energy suppliers have pledged £400,000 in funding to support an Ofgem project to offer people advice on how they can get cheap electricity and gas.

The Energy Best Deal campaign, which was launched in 2008 by the regulator alongside Citizens Advice, gives individuals guidance on switching providers and offers details on some of the government schemes available to help consumers meet their bills.

Since it was introduced, it has helped over 94,000 people cut their gas and electricity costs, while chief executive of Citizens Advice Guy Gillian stated the charity has seen a large increase in the number of people who are concerned about their fuel bills in 2011.

Indeed, recent research by Energyhelpline.com suggested 8.3 million households may be facing the prospect of fuel poverty this winter.

The companies that have pledged money to support the scheme are EDF Energy, Scottish and Southern Energy, British Gas and npower.
