Consumers hoping to perform an energy comparison in order to reduce the impact of rising bills may be interested to hear one energy supplier has called for greater clarity about the future direction of Europe's electricity generation.
Scottish and Southern Energy has partnered with Dutch provider Eneco and Denmark-based firm Dong Energy to lobby the European Commission to present a second Climate and Energy Package detailing plans for efficiency, carbon reduction and the adoption of renewables.
"The power industry requires long-term predictability ... in order to make the necessary investments in technological innovations and the low carbon energy supply chain to bring down the costs," the companies stated.
It observed that under current plans, the EU will fail to meet its objective of cutting carbon by 80-95 per cent by 2050 due to the lack of a coherent policy beyond 2020.
Recently Ofgem was asked by energy secretary Chris Huhne to investigate the long-term security of the UK's gas energy sources to establish what the impact of increasing prices for the commodity may be.
