Energy price hikes 'could come in May' - 27/04/2011

Consumers could see the price of their gas and electricity use rise as early as next month, an energy comparison site has warned.

Mark Todd, director of Energyhelpline.com, explained that recent events around the world have caused wholesale gas prices to increase and noted that some investors want the cost of domestic energy use to rise further in order to raise profits.

He warned: "A major price movement of around 15 per cent is expected between August and November but energy suppliers are currently thought to be considering smaller spring price adjustments even before then."

With the average annual bill for a household's energy use currently standing at £1,150, a 15 per cent hike could see it increase by £172.50.

Mr Todd recommended customers switch to opt for a low-cost fixed rate or internet rate.
