BCC urges firms to improve business energy efficiency - 17/02/2010

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has urged small and medium-sized companies to be more efficient with their business gas and electricity use.

The industry body encouraged small firms to take advantage of interest-free loans from the Carbon Trust so they can install business energy efficient measures.

Loans from the Carbon Trust range from £3,000 to £500,000 and can be used to invest in business energy saving projects which cut down the price of bills from energy suppliers.

It is estimated that small businesses can save between £14,000 and £130,000 a year by using Carbon Trust loans to implement energy efficient schemes.

David Frost, director general of the BCC, said: "By replacing old inefficient equipment, firms can dramatically cut costs and, in many cases, improve productivity by between 20 and 30 per cent."

The Carbon Trust recently announced that the first company to receive a maximum loan of £500,000 is expected to cut its indirect electricity use by more than 60 per cent.
