Climate change 'to cost UK businesses hundreds of millions a year' - 16/03/2012

Many business energy users may need to seek out cheap electricity deals in order to minimise the impact climate change will have on their enterprise.

According to research from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics), UK firms could spend up to £355 million extra a year on power to run warehouses by 2030.

Office-based enterprises and the retail sector are likely to see additional expenses of up to £250 million, as buildings that are reliant on air conditioning become vulnerable to price increases.

Director of sustainability and special projects at Rics Martin Russell-Croucher said: "Many of Britain's current commercial buildings ... are just not energy efficient and suitably equipped to cope with the future predicted changes in climate."

It was noted volatility between extreme cold and warm weather will have a large impact on electricity demand as firms use more power to maintain a comfortable working environment.

Recently, Return On IT director of marketing Andrew Boddington stated making changes to computing equipment, such as adopting virtualised servers and switching machines off overnight, can result in a large difference being seen in business electricity bills.
