Business energy contracts for wind farms could go to major suppliers - 02/11/2009
Several major energy suppliers are likely to be awarded contracts to develop substantial offshore wind farms around Britain's coastline, reports the Telegraph.
Vattenfall and Scottish Power are likely to be awarded rights to a £100 billion wind farm off the coast of Norfolk that will focus on the construction of 341 separate turbines that will generate 5,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
In addition, a separate consortium of companies including Scottish & Southern Energy and RWEnpower Renewables could be awarded the Dogger Bank project in the North Sea that will generate 10,000MW.
The escalation in wind farm planning development comes as the government faces intense pressure to reach ambitious green targets and reduce the national carbon footprint, part of which is due to met by the development of new nuclear reactors by the end of the next decade.
Wind turbines have the highest profile within the renewable energy sector and offshore projects are more popular than their onshore counterparts due to their reduced visual impact.
