Business energy clients who use data centres may be able to improve their energy efficiency by making changes to such storage facilities.
Hamish Macarthur, chief executive and co-founder of market research company Macarthur Stroud International, pointed out that energy saving is "an issue" and as such is part of the ongoing costs of each business.
"However, it is when there are pressures on energy supply or when new data centres are being deployed that architecture and design considerations will focus on energy usage, and energy savings are maximised," he pointed out.
Mr Macarthur's comments come after environmental lobby group Greenpeace released a report analysing the energy output of data centres and other IT equipment.
The group said: "Our analysis of current data centre investments has found that despite significant advances in making data centres more energy efficient, the sector as a whole is largely ignoring the importance of using renewable energy."
Businesses wanting to minimise energy expenditure could switch energy deals or look instead for green energy tariffs.
