Govt 'should help businesses go green' - 01/06/2011

The government should do more to help business energy users go green, Summit Systems has argued.

A spokeswoman for the automated materials handling company said it is "sad" that the government has decided to cut core funding to the Energy Saving Trust and the Carbon Trust.

"Certainly in this particular area it is not good, because it is a growing area and it needs firm investment and assistance," she noted.

Additionally, the government should be channelling help "through local councils that have only really been proactive in providing local communities - not businesses - with different types of recycle bins", the spokeswoman said.

Local authorities are "not proactive enough" in other areas, such as supporting energy efficiency in businesses.

Meanwhile, proposals for an Enterprise Zone on both banks of the Humber in Yorkshire have been put forward.

If plans are approved, new business energy clients looking to invest in the zone area will be offered tax breaks.
