A grant to help business energy users in the south-east get cheap gas and electricity has proved highly successful in helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cut costs, it has been claimed.
Greenwise Business reports more than 94 per cent of companies that applied for assistance under the Energy Grant500 scheme have seen their expenses reduce as a result, according to a survey conducted by BSK-CIC.
Four out of ten SMEs that received the £500 grant are spending between ten and 19 per cent less on gas and electricity than they were before, while almost 15 per cent have seen their outgoings cut by between 20 and 29 per cent.
However, it also found there are still several barriers to energy efficiency in SMEs, with issues such as a poor understanding of energy consumption, a lack of funds and a distrust of the products and services available commonly cited as reasons why some firms did not take-up the offer.
Recently, it was claimed by the Carbon Trust that ensuring their boilers are working as efficiently as possible could save UK firms up to £400 million a year.
