Manufacturers 'need specific Green Deal' - 07/06/2012

Business energy customers in the manufacturing sector need more help from the government in order to make their operations more energy efficient to save money and cut emissions.

It was suggested by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) that a version of the government's Green Deal policy aimed specifically at these enterprises would be highly beneficial, BusinessGreen reports.

The group observed there are currently few incentives for small manufacturers to improve their efficiency and such a scheme would address this.

Associate director at the IPPR Will Straw said the current growth plan for many firms, which is dependent on high-carbon operations, is "an untenable and costly policy for the UK in the long-run".

The organisation stated steps such as setting higher targets for carbon reduction by the end of the decade will be an effective way to stimulate investment in green technologies for manufacturers.

This week, energy suppliers from across Europe stated there should be binding targets in place for 2030 as well as 2020 and 2050.
