Renewable heat target for Scottish energy suppliers - 11/06/2009

Energy suppliers in Scotland will have to make extra efforts to provide renewable heat to consumers in future if the Scottish climate change bill is approved by Holyrood.

An amendment to the bill has been made that requires the Scottish government to develop new plans for renewable heat sources within 12 months of the bill coming into force.

A committee of MSPs voted through the changes, meaning if the bill is backed by the Scottish parliament it will pass into law in the near future, allowing Scottish homeowners to access green energy.

According to New Energy Focus, energy for heat is responsible for almost half of all greenhouse gas emissions in the UK, meaning that being able to deliver renewable heat sources will dramatically cut the UK's overall carbon emissions.

Meanwhile Labour MSP Sarah Boyack has described the climate change bill as "perhaps the most important piece of legislation the Scottish Parliament will pass this session".

Writing in the Scotsman, she suggested it is vital that the bill will provide the means to allow people "to take practical action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions".
