Fewer people compare energy ratings on home entertainment devices - 24/07/2009

Over 70 per cent of homeowners know the efficiency rating of kitchen appliances so they can pursue cheap energy rates, but far fewer do the same for home entertainment devices.

According to a new study commissioned by Sony UK and carried out by Loudhouse research consultancy, less than 45 per cent of homeowners are aware how much energy their other household appliances use, reports Click Green.

Kitchen appliances now carry an efficiency rating between A and G, which helps highlight the issue, but devices used outside the kitchen do not have the same environmental focus.

Paula Owen, head of knowledge services at the Energy Saving Trust, told the website: "With UK households spending around £3 billion a year on electricity bills to run consumer electronics products, people need a quick and easy way of knowing which products are energy efficient and therefore cheaper to run."

Homeowners can reduce their energy bills by making sure all unused electrical appliances are switched off at the mains rather than being left on standby.
