Funding to encourage people to switch energy habits - 26/08/2009

A fund set up by major energy supplier British Gas is designed to encourage people to pursue more efficient domestic habits and is still available to the public.

The firm's Green Streets campaign encourages residents throughout the UK to apply for part of a £2 million fund to help them set up a range of clean energy equipment or measures designed to improve efficiency in a building.

Technology such as wind turbines, air source heat pumps and hydro power are all included in the remit and the scheme has the backing of television presenter and explorer Ben Fogle.

Gearoid Lane, managing director of British Gas New Energy said: "We want to show local groups the carbon and financial savings they could enjoy by providing the funding, support and technical expertise needed to develop and implement their ideas."

Communities have until the end of August to apply for funding to help them switch gas and electricity suppliers for cleaner alternatives.

Government grants for efficiency measures are also available for many vulnerable homes around the UK.
