ICE calls for policy statement on cheap energy CCS - 02/11/2009
Partly to enable people to switch energy to cleaner sources, the government needs to make a national policy statement regarding carbon capture and storage (CCS), says the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).
The organisation said the government needs to confirm details of its plans for developing the technology in order to encourage greater investment and enable the development of more coal power stations that can have a less harmful environmental impact, reports the Guardian.
Geoff French, vice-president of ICE, said clarity is needed in relation to who will be expected to look after the pipe networks and storage facilities involved with CCS technology.
Mr French told the paper: "What we want is for the government to clearly set the framework and then leave it to industry to get on with it."
He added the regulatory framework is vital as coal will be an integral part of Britain's energy industry for some years to come.
The government plans to develop an energy infrastructure comprising nuclear and renewable energy over the coming years in order to safeguard the country's future and tackle prices from energy suppliers.
