Firms 'must generate their own renewable business energy' - 06/05/2010

Firms must generate their own renewable business energy, as it is the only viable way forward for private sustainable energy, an expert has said.

According to Antony Blakey, founder and executive chairman of renewable energy company Ultra Green, governments are unable to afford to subsidise sustainable cheap energy on a large scale so the onus is on businesses to take the helm.

He stressed that small and large companies alike will have to take the initiative to build and run their own renewable energy installations such as waste recyclers in the basement and wind power systems on the roof.

Mr Blakely commented: "I think government helps to ease the platform and there are obviously feed-in tariffs, but in the short-term you've really got to have an alternative energy system that pays for itself with or without grants.

"It's a much more radical approach to run your organisation entirely on green power."

Search engine giant Google recently announced plans to invest in two wind farms that have a combined generation potential of 169.5 megawatts (around 55,000 homes worth of power).
