Wind energy sector 'set for growth' - 05/08/2011
Energy suppliers' customers who want to switch energy deals to a green tariff might soon be receiving their power from wind sources.
According to Rob Norris, press officer at RenewableUK, the wind power industry is set for growth over the next few years, but will require support from government.
"The industry still needs to be able to stand on its own two feet, and to get the crucial level of government support it needs to do that," he noted.
"You need that support mechanism from the government to do that, and will do for some time, but we [also] recognise that the industry has to also play its part by driving costs down all the time."
Mr Norris explained that the green energy sector is looking to install 40 gigawatts of capacity in the next 20 to 30 years, but "the right level of government support" is essential.
His comments came after the European Wind Energy Association predicted that green electricity production will increase across the EU from 5.5 per cent of total demand in 2010 to 15.7 per cent in 2020.
