Ofgem to fund smarter energy networks - 28/11/2011
People looking to compare energy suppliers in order to find cheap electricity may be interested to hear Ofgem has announced funding to improve the performance of the UK's infrastructure.
The regulator is set to provide £57 million from its Low Carbon Networks Fund to six trial projects to make the country's power grids smarter and more efficient.
Acting senior partner for smarter grids, governance and distribution at Ofgem Rachel Fletcher explained investment is necessary to help prepare the UK's infrastructure for the future.
"Britain's energy grids need to undergo a revolution in how they are run so they can connect more renewable generators and a range of low carbon technologies such as ground source heat pumps," she stated.
One of the firms to receive money will be Scottish Power, which will be running flexible network schemes at St Andrews in Scotland, Wrexham in Wales and Whitchurch in England.
Chief executive of energy networks at the organisation Frank Mitchell stated the innovation has the potential to greatly reduce the cost of running the grid, as well as allow new power sources to connect to homes and businesses faster.
