Energy efficiency 'a priority' for home buyers - 14/02/2012
Many people who are looking to secure cheap electricity deals by performing an energy comparison may have fuel costs in mind when looking for a new abode.
Research by SmartNewHomes found 82 per cent of people actively look for efficiency measures when they are hunting for a property, with 77 per cent of these saying the potential for cheaper bills is their primary motivation.
The organisation noted this marks a significant change since 2005, when four-fifths of buyers would give no thought to eco-measures at all, which may reflect higher prices in the past few years, as the average dual fuel bill has climbed by 117 per cent over the period.
Director of SmartNewHomes Steve Lees said: "Homebuyers can no longer afford to ignore the opportunity to save money on their energy bills by taking into account the green credentials of any home they are considering buying."
The most popular features buyers look for are A-rated appliances, followed by solar panels and butts for collecting rainwater, the group's survey found.
Recently, it was also stated by the National Insulation Association that good lagging can help cut domestic energy bills by up to 50 per cent.
