Domestic energy customers might want to switch gas and electricity deals after it emerged the price of energy is running at 30 per cent higher than last year's rate.
The Daily Mail reports that Ofgem figures show the wholesale cost of gas for the coming winter is, at 70p a therm, up 30 per cent on the same cold weather period of 2010.
Meanwhile, the watchdog is to look into the Big Six energy suppliers' accounts as part of an investigation into their prices and profits.
Christine McGourty, director of Energy UK, comments: "Energy companies are collaborating with Ofgem to ensure that the market continues to work effectively."
It comes after ScottishPower announced a 19 per cent rise in its gas tariffs and a ten per cent rise in the price of electricity.
