Firms have been urged to gain a better understanding of their business energy usage in order to know where their carbon emissions are coming from.
According to the Centre for Alternative Technology, the first things organisations should do is carry out an audit of their existing emissions of business gas and electricity usage, so they know which areas of their business need better efficiency.
Companies were advised to solicit the help of organisations like the Carbon Trust to help with improving their business energy efficiency.
"Once you have an understanding of where your emissions are coming from, you can look at the different options for reducing them in those areas," a spokesperson for the Centre for Alternative Technology said.
The spokesperson went on to say business can save money by switching to renewable energy in order to meet national and international targets. He added that the government can also encourage for business energy efficiency by incentivising low carbon technologies.
