Hotel cuts cheap electricity bills by a quarter - 24/03/2011

Business energy users could take a leaf out of a Yorkshire hotel's book and cut their bills by refurbishing workplaces.

The Yorkshire Post reports that Whitley Hall Hotel in Sheffield has cut its cheap energy expenditure by over a quarter (26.5 per cent), with cheap electricity bills down 32 per cent.

It did so by taking out an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust and made the venue more energy efficient.

David Broadbent, owner of the hospitality business, told the newspaper: "In financial terms, it's a decision that makes itself, and in business terms it’s a no-brainer to be honest. When the loan is repaid, we will still be left with all the energy saving technology we have installed, which means we save even more money."

The contractor who carried out the work looked at ways in which the hotel could cut its power usage, such as heat recovery through insulation, building management systems and voltage regulation.

Businesses which take out loans from the trust only repay the money through savings made in cutting energy bills, which could persuade more companies to follow in Whitley Hall's footsteps.
