Scottish programme to facilitate cheap energy welcomed - 01/04/2009

A new Scottish programme designed to help reduce the impact of steep prices from energy suppliers has been welcomed by several organisations.

The Scottish Fuel Poverty forum, the Scottish Children's Fuel Poverty Coalition and Age Concern Scotland are among the organisations to have praised the development.

More than £60 million is to be provided each year by the Scottish government to help ensure customers are paying the correct energy tariff and to reduce bills by installing insulation in many households with young and disabled children, as well as in those occupied by pensioners.

John Dickie, from the Scottish Children's Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: "It will ensure many more families get the substantial energy efficiency improvements needed to reduce the devastating impact of energy bills on family budgets."

The new package is due to replace the Central Heating and Warm Deal programmes and will be delivered with the help of advice centres run by Energy Saving Scotland.

Last year, the government in Westminster announced plans to promote widespread energy efficiency rather than impose a windfall tax on energy companies.
