Breaking News from energyhelpline.com: the gas & electricity switching service that compares all energy suppliers: Scottish government awards green energy contract - 06/05/2009

Spanish energy giant Iberdrola has won a contract with the Scottish Executive to provide the country with green energy.

The firm's ScottishPower subsidiary has been awarded a £600 million contract that will see it supplying green energy to all of the country's large public buildings as well as a number of other sites.

It is hoped the initiative will ensure that Scotland's public buildings are being powered by environmentally-friendly technology and deliver cheap energy to the region.

"We are delighted to have won the right to supply the vast majority of the public sector's power requirements in Scotland," said Willie MacDiarmid, director of energy retail at ScottishPower.

He added: "The opportunity to supply green energy to our country's large public buildings, from the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh Castle to all schools and hospitals, is a major achievement."

Meanwhile, the UK government is looking to boost the use of green energy as part of its efforts to kick-start the economy.

Chancellor Alistair Darling announced in his Budget speech last month that environmentally-friendly technology would be an important area of government investment to help ensure the sector could lead the UK out of recession.
