Fuel debts prompting Brits to switch energy suppliers? - 16/09/2009
A public advice agency has discovered that the number of Britons concerned about their fuel debts is on the increase, potentially leading many consumers to switch energy providers.
Research by Citizens Advice has highlighted that the number of Britons enquiring about fuel debts rose this year by 53 per cent to the end of June, compared with last year's figures.
"Citizens Advice Bureaux work daily to assist clients who may be in fuel debt or have other concerns about their energy bills," commented David Harker, chief executive of Citizens Advice.
He went on to say those most in need of advice in relation to switching their energy suppliers may be daunted by the process of trying to change providers, but advice can help ease people's worries and ensure they know how to save on their fuel bills.
Gas and electricity watchdog Ofgem claimed last month that Britain's big six energy suppliers spent £157 million on voluntary social programmes during 2008-09 to help reduce the number of consumers who are fuel poor.
