People keen to switch energy sources in Sunderland could be pleased to hear that the Great Eppleton wind farm is to have its turbines upgraded.
The site is operated by energy supplier E.On, which has enlisted the help of turbine manufacturer REpower to install MM92 turbines to the four existing machines and nearly triple the amount of electricity generated by the farm.
Work on the site is scheduled to be completed by February next year and could herald a wave of upgrades to older wind farms throughout the UK in a bid to improve their efficiency.
Gary Simmonds, project developer at E.On, said: "It is an excellent location for a wind farm and through the repowering project we hope to improve the site and its potential for wind energy even further."
When the improvements have been made and the wind farm is operational again, it is set to generate 8.2MW of electricity.
The government recently announced plans to develop a series of additional offshore wind farms around the UK's coastline.
