Jobs to build cheap energy nuclear reactors could go to US - 24/11/2009
The development of new nuclear reactors in the UK could enable consumers to compare energy sources more easily, but construction jobs may end up going to US workers.
Nuclear firm Westinghouse is expected to announce that US company the Shaw Group will be the primary contractor for the £10 billion development of new nuclear reactors rather than competitor Fluor, while many component parts are forecast to be imported, reports the Guardian.
According to the Unite union, 10,000 new jobs earmarked for UK workers will not be created as a result of the development.
Dougie Rooney, Unite's national energy officer, told the paper: "The implications are massive. With Fluor, there is a far greater opportunity to get UK companies involved."
A US-based spokesman for Westinghouse told the paper the company intends to employ British workers for the construction projects "as much as possible".
French-owned energy supplier EDF is scheduled to lead nuclear redevelopment in the UK and the government recently revealed details of ten sites that have been marked as suitable for new nuclear reactors.
