WWF: Scottish govt needs to re-think cheap energy efficiency plans - 02/12/2009
The Scottish government has been called upon by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to switch energy policies in order to tackle fuel poverty more effectively.
According to the charity, the government should approach each part of Scotland on a street-by-street basis and install energy-saving measures in a systematic way, rather than continue with its existing means-tested approach.
The charity said this would work to both reduce carbon emissions by nearly 20 per cent, as well as lowering the number of families living in fuel poverty by more than a quarter.
Elizabeth Leighton, the senior policy officer at WWF Scotland, said: "An area-based scheme, available to everyone, delivers a triple benefit by reducing fuel poverty rates, carbon emissions and energy costs."
A range of grants are currently available from the government in Westminster to help vulnerable and other low-income families install measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation to help their properties retain heat.
