Customers wishing to switch gas deals could sign up for a new tariff from British Gas which enables householders to decide where funding should go to support community energy schemes.
The energy supplier's energyshare tariff means that for every year a household stays on the plan, British Gas will donate £10 to the energyshare fund and ask customers to vote for their favourite local project.
It also matches customers' electricity use with energy from 100 per cent renewable sources at the same price as the British Gas standard tariff.
Gearoid Lane, managing director of new markets at the company, commented: "When it comes to tackling climate change, we know that people want to do the right thing but, with household budgets stretched, do not want to pay extra for it.
"The energyshare tariff gives households a British renewable electricity tariff at no extra cost whilst funding local community energy projects," he added.
