Green energy sector harbours 'crisis of confidence' - 01/06/2011

Uncertainty over the future of the green energy sector has resulted in a crisis of confidence in the industry's workers, cheap gas customers might be surprised to learn.

Research from Ernst & Young revealed that just 14 per cent of people working in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors are confident about job security and growth, down from 65 per cent last November.

Steve Lang, UK cleantech leader at the market research company, told the Guardian: "Compared with the level of ambition, clarity of policy direction and scale of investment being delivered by a number of other countries, the UK is in danger of being left behind."

He noted that the review of the feed-in tariff scheme was "highly damaging" to confidence in renewables, particularly as investors had already injected money into solar panel projects.

The firm's research also pointed to the government's range of proposed reforms to the cheap electricity market as a cause of uncertainty in the industry.
