Carrying out an energy comparison and making a move to switch gas tariffs has been voted the top household budgeting priority by UK customers.
According to research from E.ON, over a third (35 per cent) of people place saving money on their utility bills as more important than making savings on their grocery shopping, home phone and broadband bills, petrol or on going out.
Some 84 per cent of respondents said the main reason they compare energy prices is to cut back on expenditure, while half (47 per cent) are motivated by a need to protect the environment.
Another 44 per cent have taken on the mantle of cutting back wastage by making changes to their energy use.
Graham Bartlett, managing director of the energy supplier's Energy Solutions division, commented: "We all know that energy is one of life's essentials, but a huge number of people aren't aware of the financial savings that they could make, just by getting energy fit and introducing small changes to the way they use energy at home."
