Scotland's marine energy 'attracting more interest' - 06/07/2011

Scottish residents hoping to switch gas and find cheap energy deals might be interested to learn that the country has received "a huge vote of confidence" in its bid to become the European capital of green energy.

This is the view of energy, enterprise and tourism minister Fergus Ewing, who was speaking at the state-of-the-art European Marine Energy Centre, which tests wave and hydro energy technologies.

He pointed out that energy suppliers, including ScottishPower, have become increasingly more intrigued by the Orkney-based facility, where tidal prototype devices are put through their paces.

"Scotland's wave and tidal energy resource is almost unparalleled, representing around a quarter of Europe's tidal stream and ten per cent of its wave energy potential," Mr Ewing explained.

"Marine energy can make an enormous contribution to energy security in future years - and contribute to economic growth across the EU. Scotland is at the forefront of harnessing this power."
