Parliament approves new energy planning legislation - 20/07/2011

Customers of energy suppliers might be interested to hear that parliament has approved new changes to the planning process for developers of major energy projects in England and Wales.

The House of Commons this week voted on the Energy National Policy Statements, which will be used by the Infrastructure Planning Commission to inform planning decisions.

Decentralisation minister Greg Clark commented: "Energy projects provide a real growth opportunity for this country and will bring billions of pounds of investment that will not only lead to jobs but essential new infrastructure.

"These statements are an important part of the package of reforms government is making to the planning system and will ensure faster decisions can be made," he added.

Meanwhile, Ofgem has granted an offshore transmission owner licence to Gunfleet Sands wind farm, meaning its owner can operate the link to the onshore grid for 20 years.
