The Labour party has called on the government to act immediately to ensure families have access to cheap energy.
Shadow energy and climate change secretary Caroline Flint said: "Soaring energy bills are driving up inflation and contributing to the cost of living crisis afflicting millions of families."
She added recent research by Which? that revealed more than four million complaints were made to the major energy suppliers last year demonstrates how the public is being failed by providers.
Therefore it is vital the government enacts measures to crack down on any abuses of their position made by the domestic energy giants, Ms Flint continued.
Her statement comes shortly after leader of the opposition Ed Miliband unveiled a policy that would require providers to ensure customers aged over 75 are offered the cheapest available tariffs.
