VAT cut 'crucial' to boosting Green Deal - 01/03/2012
It is essential that individuals looking to get cheap energy through the Green Deal are offered tax breaks in order to encourage take-up of the scheme.
This is according to Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, who said cutting VAT on materials such as insulation would be a key step for the government.
"If they provide a reduction on VAT then it will make the Green Deal work much more effectively in terms of the consumer take-up," he stated, noting such a move will "tie in extremely well" with the goals of the scheme.
Mr Leech predicted that unless consumers are offered incentives such as this, there will be no great demand for making the energy efficiency improvements the initiative is designed to be used for.
His comments come as climate change minister Greg Barker highlighted the benefits of the Green Deal at the British Property Federation Residential Conference, where he said the scheme is a "fantastic opportunity" for homeowners in the UK to develop their abode.
