Consumers who are looking to pay less to their energy suppliers have been encouraged to improve their insulation and lighting.
According to Charles Dowson, founder of Be Energy Smart, many people waste money by using traditional filaments in their home.
However, he said installing low-energy lighting can be an affordable way to cut costs and get a "really quick payback".
Mr Dowson also suggested households look at making sure their loft is properly insulated, as this too can deliver significant savings in a short period.
"If you don't have loft insulation, you're completely mad I think," he commented.
Indeed, Mr Dowson said he believes this is the quickest way to reduce the outlay on energy.
The government recently outlined its commitment to making homes more eco-friendly, as it claims they are not as energy-efficient as those in the rest of Europe.
According to official figures, a third of the carbon emissions produced by the country come from people's homes and 15 million of these do not have proper insulation.
