Honesty is best policy for green energy - 01/04/2011

While the economic downturn has inevitably had an effect on investment levels in green energy technology, the government should tell cheap energy consumers about what can be expected of the clean power sector's short-term future.

This is the opinion of Dr John Constable, director of policy and research at the Renewable Energy Foundation, who said "more honesty" from the government about green electricity would be welcome, and could even prevent disappointment further down the line.

He noted that in order for cleaner power to become more accessible, broader experimentation in the renewables industry is "desireable".

Dr Constable added: "Subsidy-induced deployment at scale in order to meet targets is likely to be technologically counterproductive, stunting invention and inhibiting innovation."
