British Gas has called for a constructive debate to take place over the concept of collective energy switching to ensure the process is fair.
The company noted while it supports calls from secretary of state for energy and climate change Edward Davey to embrace new ways of choosing gas and electricity suppliers, it noted current proposals do not meet standards for transparency and simplicity.
Managing director of energy at British Gas Ian Peters said: "Any new buying mechanism must be simple, transparent and fair for all customers."
He added it should give opportunities to every consumer to get the best value for money and not just those who will look to switch energy provider regularly.
British Gas recently confirmed changes to its tariff system to offer just two choices to users, in order to make its products simpler.
