New proposals from the Labour party could help older people with their bills by ensuring they are on cheap energy deals.
MP for Wentworth and Dearne John Healey said with more than 400 tariffs available, it is unsurprising up to 80 per cent of people in his local area are paying over the odds for gas and electricity, the Doncaster Free Press reports.
He added: "This rip-off must end. To start with, the big energy companies must make sure pensioners over 75 are on the cheapest energy deal."
Such a policy would assist up to four million older individuals, who are the group most at risk of fuel poverty as well as being the least likely to shop around for a better deal.
Recently, EDF announced plans to move all of its elderly customers automatically to its cheapest tariffs, which should save the average consumer £40 a year.
