A new study has seen scientists develop methods of predicting wave power in order to increase the efficiency of energy harnessing.
Experts from the University of Exeter have devised a means of accurately predicting power levels in order to extract double the amount of energy that is currently possible.
Marine energy is thought to have the potential to provide the UK with electricity twice over, but ways of extracting and converting energy remain limited.
Lead author of the study, Dr Guang Li of engineering at the University of Exeter said the research could help to make "huge advances" to a technology that has previously proven challenging.
He added: "This is a major step forward and could help pave the way for wave energy to play a significant role in providing our power."
