E.ON switches to 100% renewable energy for 3.3 million UK homes

Big Six supplier becomes largest green energy firm in Britain to date

E.ON switches to 100% renewable energy for 3.3 million UK homes

From today, E.ON’s 3.3 million customers will be automatically switched to renewably sourced electricity tariffs in a bid to address national concerns regarding climate change.

The new standard tariff will come at no extra cost to E.ON’s customers, and those already in receipt of a renewable electricity ‘bolt on’ will have said charge removed from their energy bill.

Along with E.ON’s own reserve of wind, solar, and biomass assets — which can currently power 1.7 million households — the Big Six supplier will also be drawing power from its various renewable energy certificates.

Renewable energy certificates, such as
REGOs, guarantee that all of E.ON’s electricity has been supplied by a renewable source.

The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme is issued to every megawatt hour (MWh) that is renewably sourced, so that consumers can trace how much of their electricity supply is green.

Climate change and renewable energy have become more prominent issues in the public sphere, according to the results of recent YouGov surveys.

In April, the ‘Top Issues Tracker’ revealed that the environment has become the fourth most important issue for voters. Environmental issues, which tied with the economy, were preceded by Brexit, healthcare, and crime.

Another YouGov survey conducted in March indicated that 79 per cent of Britons are in support of seeing the country switch to cleaner sources of energy, such as wind and solar.
