General Fusion is set to build a nuclear fusion demonstration plant in Culham, Oxfordshire, home to the UK's national fusion research programme.

Fusion uses the Sun to generate energy by attempting to fuse atoms rather than splitting them, which is seen as a crucial method of energy generation if we are to achieve greener nuclear power.

While no official figure has been released, it is believed the project has cost around the $400m mark, and the company aims to have it operational by 2025.

The government has said the building of the plant will create hundreds of jobs in Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties during its construction phase, as well as many after.

"This new plant by General Fusion is a huge boost for our plans to develop a fusion industry in the UK, and I'm thrilled that Culham will be home to such a cutting-edge and potentially transformative project," said UK Science Minister Amanda Solloway.

"Fusion energy has great potential as a source of limitless, low-carbon energy, and today's announcement is a clear vote of confidence in the region and the UK's status as a global science superpower."
