Renewables generated over a third of electricity in 2019

2019 has seen a 4% increase on 2018.

Renewable energy made up 37.1% of Britain's electricity in 2019, compared to 33.1% in 2018.

Wind farms alone provided the UK with a record 20% of electricity in 2019, while also setting new records in the annual quantities of power it provided, with both onshore and offshore generating 32 terawatt-hours (TWh), out of the total 121TWh that renewables generated.

Another promising statistic is that low carbon generation from renewables and nuclear energy reached a record of 54.4%, despite nuclear falling to 17.3% due to maintenance and outages, according to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Gas also generated 40.6% and coal reached a record low of 2.1%.

RenewableUK’s Deputy Chief Executive, Melanie Onn, said:

“In 2010 less than 7% of our electricity came from renewables, now it’s 37%. But we know that to tackle the existential threat of climate change, we need to decarbonise not just electricity, but also heating and transport, where progress has been glacial.”

Nina Skorupska CBE, Chief Executive of the Renewable Energy Association, said:

“The growth of renewable electricity in the UK continues to be a major success story. The UK continues to break records and the success of getting to just under 40% renewable electricity generation in a little over a decade needs to be celebrated.”
